Function:

Antibacterial: any drugs or medicine use to treat bacterial infection

 

Usage

The drugs is used to treat respiratory and ENT infection caused by bacteria such pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media, streptococcus tonsillitis. Include infection area that used amoxicillin for treatment are; stomatologic infections, urinary tract infection (cystitis) gastrointestinal and biliary infections, infection cause by helicopter pylori, these should be used in combination with omeprazole and metronidazole or tinidazole. Treatment of leptospirosis etc.

The drugs is alternative to switch from parenteral administration to oral therapy

 

Availability

Come in 250mg and 500mg tablet or capsule forms.

250mg amoxicillin is the most widely circulate forms

Also come in 125mg/5ml in oral powder suspension

Prescription

Children: 45 to 50mg/kg in 2 to 3 divided dose

Adult: 1.5g/day in 3 divided doses or 2g/day in 2 divided doses

It is advisable to double the dosage from 80 to 100mg/kg/day in 3 divided dose in a case of severe infection in children and 3g/day in 3 divided dose in adult.

 

Duration of Administration

 

Duration time of the administration of amoxicillin varies with type of infection; below so of the duration of administering the drugs with type of infection;

Otitis media and cystitis the treatment should last for 5 days.

Tonsillitis: the treatment should last for 6 days

Leptospirosis, pneumonia and sinusitis: the treatment should last for 7 to 10 days

Helicopter pylori: the treatment should last for 10 to 14 days

Typhoid fever: the treatment should last for 14 days

 

 

Precautions

Do not administer to the following patient;

  1. A patient allergic to penicillin.
  2. A patient with infectious mononucleosis

Administer with care to a patient allergic to cephalosporin’s (cross sensitivity may occurs).

 

Adverse effect

May cause gastrointestinal disturbance, some lead to severe allergic reaction, in the cause of allergic reaction, the administration should be discontinues immediately.

 

 

Usage Advice

 

Pregnancy and breast feeding: no contra indication

Amoxicillin should instead of ampicillin, because it absorbed better and only half dose is needed.

The maximum day to keep the oral suspension after dilutions is 7 days.

Always store at temperature bellow 25ºC.
