Renunciation of Nigerian Citizenship

Citizenship Renunciation

1. Any citizen of nigeria of full age who wish to renounce his nigerian citizenship shall make a declaration in the prescribed manner for the renunciation.

2. The president shall cause the declaration made to be registered as appropriate and upon such registration the person who made the declaration shall cease to be a citizen of Nigeria.

3. The president may withhold registration of any declaration made if:

a. The declaration is made during any war in which Nigeria is physically involved or:

b. Any his opinion it is otherwise contrary to public policy.

Deprivation of citizenship

1. the president shall deprive a person other than a person who is a citizen of nigeria by birth or by registration of his citizenship if he satisfied that such a person has within a period of seven years after becoming neutralize being sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not more than 3 years.

2. The president shall deprive a person other than a person who is a citizen of nigeria by birth of his citizenship if he is satisfied from the record of proceeding of a court of law or other tribunal or after dill enquiry in accordance with regulation made by him that:

a. The person has shown himself by act or speech to be disloyal towards the federal republic of Nigeria, or

b. The person has during any war in which nigeria was engaged unlawfully traded with the enemy or being engaged in or associated with any business that was in the opinion of the president carried on in such a manner as to assist the enemy of Nigeria in that wall or unlawfully communicated with such enemy to the detriment of all with intent to cause damage to the interest of Nigeria.

Different Between Citizens and Non-citizens

All Non-citizens of a country are refer to as aliens, and they suffer some disadvantages.

1. A citizen owes allegiance to his country while a non citizens does not owes any allegiances.

2. A citizens has full legal rights, whereas that of Non citizens are limited.

3. A citizen of a country regard his country as his permanent home where as a non-citizen see it a temporary residence.

4. A citizen has a right to vote in election and contest for elective position non citizen does not have such right.

5. Any time of war a citizen is prepared to die for his country by enlisting in the arm force but non-citizen will not be ready to die for another country.

6. A citizen of a country can hold any public office or as a non citizens can not hold any public office.

7. A citizens right and duties are defined by the country’s constitution whereas that of a non citizens are derived from internalized convention hospitality of the home country and immigration law.

8. A citizen of a country cannot suffer deportation why a non citizen can be deported if the need arises

9. A citizen may engage in any lawful business or employment or as a non citizen is restricted for security reason.
