Several Reported Dead As Fire Guts Borno IDP Camp

Many people killed in a Fire Outbreaks at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.

The fire outbreak, that take place on Thursday, said to have claimed the lives of four people.

Peoples die include two children and two elderly persons.

The information which was disclosed by Mr. Ibrahim Uba, Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), media officer

Said that over 4,000 households were affected by the fire, also the only hospital in the community was also razed down.

He further said that a high-level delegation constituted by SEMA had visited Gajiram to assess the extent of damage and get first-hand information from those affected.

Meanwhile, a humanitarian organisation, Norwegian Refugee Council, said they learn that 8 people lost their lives, and two others sustained injured at the affected hospital.

According to the organisation, outbreak of the fire begin as a result of a spark from a cooking stove used by a child preparing her own food.

But an eye witness told Channels Television that the inferno was fuelled by a whirlwind, which made it spread fast, burning down shelters in the camp.

It said the victims of the incident were dispersed and seeking shelter under trees and many of them exposed to direct sunlight.

We also learn that these same scenarios has claimed 3 lives in February at an IDP camp in Monguno Local Government Area of the state.
