Video; Police Arrest 26 NURTW Members In Oyo State

Twenty-six members of the proscribed National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have been apprehended by the Oyo State police in Oyo.

Shina Olukolu, The commissioner of police in the state, revealed this yesterday, when he was briefing at the police command headquarters in Ibadan the state capital.

On his speech, he said the suspects were apprehended as they try to take over motor parks at various parts of the state forcefully

He added somes of the suspect were apprehended at Liberty Stadium, the entrance of the venue of the inauguration of the state Governor, Seyi Makinde.

He said, “Some of these groups decided to test the capacity of the command; as a result, 26 of them were arrested for failed attempt to violently take over Motor Park in the state and at Liberty Stadium during the last inauguration,”.

The Motor parks where the suspects were said have been apprehended, include New Garage, Challenge, Iwo Road, Muslim, and parts of Oyo town.

The police also disclosed that some suspected armed robber, kidnappers and other suspected criminals were arrested.

He said from January till May this year, a total of 5,472 suspects were arrested for various offences, 3,052 charged to court, with 2,692 of those cases still awaiting trial.

Weapons such as guns with live cartridges, cutlasses, sharp knives, charms and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, were recovered from the suspects.

The Oyo State Government last week proscribed all activities of the NURTW until further notice.

Chief of Staff, Bisi Ilaka told journalists at the Governors office in Ibadan that the move is aimed at maintaining peace and order within the state.
