How Tunji Bello lost Lagos CoS position to Tayo Ayinde

Why Muri Okunola deficiencies led to Jaji emergence as Lagos SSG

High powered politics, smartly schemed, emotionally and clinically executed by the “Sanwo-Olu Core”: led to the emergence of the former Chief Security Officer to Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Director General of the defunct, Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu Campaign Organization, (BOSCO), Mr Tayo Ayinde as the Chief of Staff, (CoS), to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Mr Tunji Bello this medium learnt was the first choice of Tinubu, the leader of the governing party in Lagos State for the exalted office, to succeed Mr Olukunle Ojo who served as CoS in the immediate past administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Bello a lawyer and seasoned journalist, served as the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG) in the same administration. Bello’s choice was predicated on the quality role he played in bringing down the Ambode administration and his role as the “defacto” head of BOSCO media and publicity department.

However Governor Sanwoolu and his core were not comfortable with Bello’s choice, preferring Ayinde, a retired spy chief and a property mogul, who had done great businesses with Sanwo-Olu, a surveyor himself in the past.

Realising the probable imminent choice of Bello as SSG; and the immediate announcement of the appointment few minutes after Sanwo-Olu’s swearing in ceremony; the “Sanwo-Olu’s Core” quickly flew the “Tayo Ayinde SSG appointment kite”, on social media platforms few hours to Sanwoolu’s swearing in: after prodding the overconfident Bello to write the “Emotional Intelligence” damning report against his former boss.

The backlash from Lagos residents on Bello’s piece and the appointment rebuttal from Ayinde, casted and marred Bello as an ungrateful, viciously overambitious and an unguidedable man, especially when it came to public knowledge, how much he had gained and benefitted from the Ambode administration, and his fourteen years unbroken public office services in the State.

Tinubu having seen through it all, weighing all scenarios and to mitigate an apparent glaring case of bad bloods at the inception of the new administration, strongly reprimanded Ayinde the head of “Sanwo-Olu’s Core” who prostrated flat for Tinubu denying any culpability in the development. Tinubu thereafter offered the retired spy the Office of the CoS. He pacified Bello by mandating him to shop for for a Chief Press Secretary for the administration. This was why the “Sanwo-Olu’s Core” had to appoint a Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile. While awaiting Bello’s choice.

In a related development, the appointment of Folashade Jaji as the new Secretary to the State Government, (SSG) this medium gathered was born out to the need to cover for the glaring incompetence and inadequacies of the new Head of Service, (HoS) Mr. Hakeem Muri Okunola.

Muri Okunola was chosen above experienced, capable, competent and tested members of the body of permanent secretaries in Lagos State, by Ambode on the directive of Tinubu, who personally graced his swearing his as HoS. Muri Okunola was a former Personal Assistant to Tinubu before he was drafted into the Lagos civil service. The party loving technocrat meteoric rise in the civil service was at the behest of Tinubu who many believed is propelling him as Lagos State helmsman in the immediate future.

While many had tipped a pharmacist, business woman, Alimosho based politician and a cabinet member in the immediate past administration, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile Yusuf, as the choice for the SSG position. An incapable and inexperienced Muri Okunola being coupled with Akinbile Yusuf’s zero civil experience, will open the Sanwo-Olu administration to fatal errors. This occasioned the need for the choice of Jaji a seasoned civil servant to erase the minuses brought about by Muri Okunola’s HoS emergence.
