Kogi State Government Carpets Opposition With Gigantic Projects Spreads All Over The State

Kogi State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Obangede: From 2 Bungalow Structure to Full fledged Academic Institution Under GYB

Kogi State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Obangede was established in 1980 as School Of Nursing, Obangede with the aims at producing professional Nurses and Midwives that can stand the test of time anywhere in the world and with the vision to produce Nurses and Midwives that will raise the professional standard of Nursing and Midwifery both in educational pursuit and quality of care to the clients/patients according to the professional ethics and etiquette. These are vision and goal that can never be achieved in the absence of infrastructure and quality learning.

The College has the Philosophy to educate student Nurses and Midwives (Basic and Post) to acquire the knowledge that will enable them to take care of clients/patients in the hospitals, clinics and community at large.

Since its inception, the school’s main thrust in meeting these broad objectives has been the training of middle level manpower for Health industries. Its course was designed to provide necessary skills and professional ethics for those who would function in a specialised area of Health institutions.
Changing manpower needs in the health industry in Kogi State in particular and Nigeria in general have compelled an elaboration of the original programme orientation of the school. In other words, the whole academic programme has been restructured with a desire to expose Nursing Students to all the core and elective courses in the programme in hierarchically articulated and increasingly more sophisticated fashion culminating in comprehensive training.

But the students of this institution over the years have faced lots of hardship ranging from lack of classrooms, standard laboratory, hostel accommodation, training equipment and so on before the coming of this administration. Students were learning under the harsh condition as classrooms were used as an arena for both teaching and hostel accommodation. The learning environment was so hostile that the students cohabit with dangerous species of snakes such as Elapidae and Colubridae. The sanitary condition of students were worst than that of prisoners but all that has changed today.

The school which maintained the size of Model Nursery/Primary School owned by the Okehi Local Government Council since it’s establishment till 2016 has now been expanded infrastructurally to the modern institution under the current administration of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. Abandoned construction works such as Information/Communication Technology Centre (ICT), Administrative Block and a Female Hostel have been completed by the Bello’s led administration. Other construction works are going on in the school premises. Under four years, the dreams of Kogi citizens who desired to become world class Nurses have turned to reality as the College is rated high in terms of infrastructure and quality of learning amongst the Colleges of Nursing in Nigeria today by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
