IHEDIOHA CONFIRMS SPENDING 2.8 BILLION NAIRA FOR JULY CLEANUP EXERCISE

SAYS; OWELLE’S 200 MILLION NAIRA IS TOO SMALL AND UNSUSTAINABLE

The governor of Imo State, His Excellency Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha has conceded to his predecessor’s allegation, yesterday, that he (Governor Ihedioha) spent 2.8 billion Naira on the July 2019 cleanup exercise.

In a press statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Chibuike Onyeukwu, the governor blamed the 200 Million Naira budget for monthly sanitation by his predecessor is unsustainable, claiming that Imo during the period was an environmental disaster.

The governor, instead of denying the outrageous amount which his predecessor accused him of wasting on a month’s cleanup exercise, glossed over the issue and went on a baseless threat against the Imo West Senator.

One expected the governor to have, in the spirit of transparency which he mouths always, to rest the controversy surrounding the actual amount expended on what has been classified as the worst cleanup exercise in the State in the last eight years.

Disgustingly, after spending this huge sum of money, as alleged, and yet to be controverted, Imo State has become a garbage State, as refuse litter major roads in the State, clear three weeks after the last and so much hyped cleanup exercise.

There are people who believe that the July cleanup exercise is one of the smokescreens which the governor used in settling some of his political allies and to retire part of the 48 billion Naira handed over to him, by his predecessor. To clear this confusion, the governor, in my thinking, needs to come out clear to give account on how this money was actually spent, especially, as it has emerged that Imo became dirtier after that.

It may not be completely out of place to infer that the governor also concedes that the July cleanup exercise was a failure, hence, his reluctance or total deferment of his promised Prizes to the Cleanest LGA, cleanest Secondary School, etc.
