Bassa Kwomu communities in Toto Local Government Council of Nassarawa State has promised to do away with Violence and lives with peace with other ethnic tribes in the state.
The communities said this through Chief Philip Tatari Shekwo, the All Progressive Congress (APC) chairman of Nassarawa state, as he present some of the Bassa Kwomu communities who recently decamped to the ruling party, APC in the State to the state governor Engineer Abdullahi Sule.
Bassa Kwomu communities delegate in Nassarawa state was on Thursday led to the state government house by Samuel Gimba.
Receiving the delegation of the Bassa community led by Ambassador Samuel Gimba, Engineer Sule, described their joining the ruling APC as apt, adding that the development signals the death of opposition politics in Toto Local Government Area.
The governor noted that the Bassa community has remained the only stronghold of the opposition but with their returning to the APC by the community, opposition is now dead in Toto Local Government Area.
Engineer Sule as gratifying as their joining the ruling party, it’s equally signigicant, the resolve of the community to tow the path of peace, towards ensuring lasting peace in the area.
“My greatest joy today, is not only because the entire Bassa nation has returned to where they belonged, which is the APC, but also the fact that today, as you have promised, we are going to have lasting peace in Toto LGA,” the governor said.
He described as a remarkable feat, his administration’s peace building effort, which will finally bring to an end decades long communal strife in the area.
“I didn’t know I will be able to achieve this, together with my colleagues, the deputy governor, the Secretary to the State Government, the government and of course being led by our party, the APC and its leadership. I didn’t know we will be able to achieve this in less than six months,” Engineer Sule stated.
He disclosed that government will constitute a special delegation comprising of prominent Bassa leaders and elders, that will go to Toto, for a formal reunion with the Igbira people, as a sign that peace has finally returned to the area.
Engineer Sule urged the Bassa community to key into the policy drive of his administration, as they stand to benefit, especially with the new inroads in agriculture.
The governor used the opportunity to announced the donation of capital to over 20 women from the area, as well as training opportunity aimed at empowering women to be undertaken by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).
He expressed confidence that the Igbira and Bassa people will now live in peace with one another in Toto LGA, which the governor said is worthy of celebration.
Earlier, leader of the Bassa community delegation, Ambassador Samuel Gimba, said his people have come to pledge their unalloyed loyalty to the governor and the APC, mostly because of what the government has done to the people.
Ambassador Gimba added that the entire Bassa community have decided to end their political journey in the wilderness and to embrace the APC, which has done what the people has been yearning for during the past 40 years.
“Because what you have done for us, we have been dreaming about. Parties have come and gone, they never did it for us. But the APC, out of the blues, decided to give us an identity, to give us a personality and to say, we belong to this state,” he said.
Gimba said, for that reason, the entire Bassa nation deliberated and unanimously agreed to join the ruling APC, as the only way to show appreciation for the what the APC government is doing for the people, particularly, the creation of the Turunku Chiefdom, which has given the Bassa people an identity.
On the ongoing peace building process, Ambassador Gimba stressed that his people are convinced beyond any doubt that the APC government has the capacity and ability to work towards the actualization of the peace building process in Toto LGA.
He assured the governor that the Bassa community have decided to put an end to violence.
“We must do it. It does nobody any good. And as hard as it may be, we will follow the path of peace led by you,” Gimba told the governor.
Ambassador Gimba was accompanied to the Government House by a representative of the Bassa community, including newly elected president and secretary of the National Bassa Cultural and Development Union, community leaders, women and youths.
