Rash of Petrol Tanker Accidents, Transport Unions, Traffic control agent must sit up -Okorocha

The Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, His Excellency Owelle Rochas Okorocha has recommended strict adherence by operators and diligent implementation by regulators, of road traffic regulations, as a panacea to averting further lost of lives and destruction of properties as a result of avoidable accidents involving these petroleum products conveying vehicles.

The former Imo State governor, who was contributing to a motion on the floor of the Senate yesterday, called the attention of the Senate President and his distinguished colleagues to the fact that hundreds or even thousands of lives and billions of Naira worth of properties belonging to ordinary and struggling Nigerians must have been lost in the past one year alone, due to such accidents.

Making particular reference to the Ochanja Market Fire disaster that happened few weeks ago, the humanitarian focused politician called for urgent legislations to avert further lost of lives and properties.

He said; “Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, I am particularly pained over these avoidable mishaps, because they directly affect ordinary citizens of this country. Most of those who have lost their lives and lifetime investments are breadwinners of their families, and we can only imagine the difficult times that may await their dependents.”

Road accidents involving articulated vehicles, including, petrol tankers, cement conveying trucks and others, is estimated to have been responsible for the loss of over 1,000 lives in the last five years and over 50 billion Naira in private and public properties.
