The Senate Committee Chairman on Culture, Tourism and Arts, His Excellency Owelle Rochas Okorocha has identified cultural reorientation and improved cultural education as an important tool in the pursuit of peace and unity in Nigeria. He argued that; “As diverse as our cultures might be, there is not a single Nigerian culture that promotes disharmony, disunity, violence and crime.”

The immediate past governor of Imo State and current Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District made this call at the closing ceremony of the 12th National Arts and Crafts Expo which held at the National Exhibition Center Abuja, yesterday.

Declaring the event open, Senator Rochas Okorocha who was the chairman of the occasion reiterated his call for improved investments in the tourism and arts sectors, as they could act not just as huge triggers to the nation’s economic revival but also as veritable tools in the nation’s steady push for national healing, peace and unity.

“Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage must be exploited not just for economic purposes, but also as veritable tools for the promotion of peace and unity. When we look at our different cultures, as diverse as they are, you would observe that there is a unity in the promotion of love, respect and good morals in all of our cultures. So, I urge every Nigerian to live according to the dictates of our cultures and traditions by living peaceably with one another, respecting our differences and prompting love.”

Highlights from the event include the presentation of award plaques to deserving dignitaries, organizations and exceptional artistes. Also, white handkerchiefs were distributed as a symbol of peace to all guests.
