Schools reopen as South Africa eases COVID 19 lockdown

It was reported that as part of the gradual ease of lockdown in South Africa, children began to return to their schools, after the lockdown which lasted for over a month in the country.

Prior to this reopening of schools, the teachers’ unions in the country opposed the government directives to open schools, saying that schools lacked adequate health facilities to keep the teachers and pupils safe.

With about 50, 000 cases of coronavirus in the country and about 1, 000 deaths, the reopening of schools was taken in with fear by the educators, parents and the pupils themselves.

However, the Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, noted that efforts have been made to equip the schools for the reopening.

“The Golden rule is there will be no school that will resume if not ready to do so”, Motshekga said.
