Erosion is devastating my people” – Okorocha Former Gov of Imo State cries out

The Senate Committee Chairman on Culture, Arts and Tourism, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Owelle Rochas Okorocha has raised alarm over the menacing effect of erosion in the Southeastern part of Nigeria.

Making his plea on the floor of the Senate, Okorocha observed that “billions of dollars” have already been spent by previous administrations in a bid to tackle disasters caused by flooding and erosion in the Southeast, but these efforts have fallen short of achieving their aims, as they are either too little or too late. He therefore threw his weight behind a legislative proposal for a special commission dedicated to ecological issues.

He called the attention of the Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan and his distinguished colleagues to the ravaging effect of erosion in the Southeast and made case for priority attention to be given to the zone in subsequent allocations for ecological control by the Federal Government.

The former governor also recommended that instead of focusing more on reparation of damages caused by erosion, the commission should also take steps to forestall these damages;

“We must invest more efforts in prevention rather than cure. Curative measures are always more expensive and sometimes increases the chances of fatality, but “prevention”, like they say; “is better than cure”.
