Gov. Wike welcomes Gov. Obaseki to PDP

The governor of Rivers State, Wike, has welcomed Gov. Obaseki of Edo State into PDP, following the defection of the latter from APC.

Obaseki joined the PDP on Friday, June 19, 2020, and immediately after he announced his defection, Wike tweeted a picture of the governor holding a copy of the PDP’s constitution with the caption, “Welcome to the @OfficialPDPNig.”⁣

While announcing his defection on Friday, Obaseki said he joined the PDP to seek reelection as Edo State Governor.⁣ He said,

“I have officially joined the PDP to advance my ambition to seek re-election as Governor of Edo State. I, as always, remain committed to engendering good governance and sustainable development of our dear state.”⁣

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to Obaseki’s defection saying it didn’t come as a surprise.⁣

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Isa-Onilu said the APC knew that Obaseki had defected to the PDP long ago.⁣

Obaseki defected to the PDP days after he was disqualified from participating in the APC Governorship Primary as a result of discrepancies in his credentials.
