Israeli Automobile Company Develops Electric Car That Runs on Air and Water

Drawing from over a decade of research conducted at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv on the use of the energy in metal, Israeli start-up Phinergy has successfully demonstrated the utility of metal air technology to power automobiles. An electric vehicle powered by Phinergy’s aluminum air battery, which combines aluminum, ambient air and water, has covered over 300 kilometers of continuous driving. Last year, Phinergy consumed more than 20 megawatt hours of electricity using its proprietary metal air technology.


Metal air batteries contain an air electrode that breathes oxygen directly from ambient air, making them significantly lighter. The weight difference is akin to that of a scuba diver who carries a heavy oxygen tank to breath and a fish that just breathes oxygen through its gills. The structure of Phinergy’s air electrode allows oxygen to enter the cell while blocking out carbon dioxide. As a result, the air electrode is immune to co2 related problems, which led to metal air battery failure in previous tests.
