Bill for forfeiture of assets of accused persons scales 2nd reading
A bill that’s aimed at stripping the President of certain powers has scaled the second reading in the House of Representatives.
The stripping involve the powers to order for forfeiture of assets of accused persons.
On 2nd July, the discretionary power which was previously given to the president to order for forfeiture of assets was passed on to judges of a High Court.
The bill is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Ahmed Wase and was passed in plenary, yesterday, July 2.
During presentation, the deputy speaker said,
“It is noteworthy that the provision for forfeiture in our laws is geared towards ensuring that persons found guilty of offenses do not benefit from the proceeds of those offences.”
