Five people lose their lives in boat mishap
Five people have reportedly lost their lives in a boat mishap in Lagos State. Their boat was said to have capsized along the Ikorodu Channel of the Lagos State Waterways at about 8pm on Friday.
The Lagos State Inland Waterways Authority, (LASWA), said that the sad incident would have been avoided.
Narrating what happened, they said that a 20 passenger capacity commercial ferry having 21 passengers on board left illegally from Èbúté Jetty at about few minutes past 8.00 pm and headed towards Ikorodu.
The boat capsized when the ferry ran into an unknown obstacle on the waterway.
LASWA reveal that rescue efforts commenced immediately but only 16 were saved. While one is still in a critical condition, five others died.
The Commissioner for transportation in the state, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, has urged operators of ferry to stick to the safety guidelines put in place.
He said that this incidence would have been avoided, if the operators kept to the rule of no night travelling on the waterways from 6.00pm.
