Atletico Madrid president confirms ‘offers’ for Jan Oblak amid Chelsea transfer plan

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has confirmed that there have been “offers” for Jan Oblak, and says he isn’t surprised at the interest given the goalkeeper’s quality.

The Slovenian international has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his time at the Wanda Metropolitano, and is reportedly a summer target for Chelsea, who are keen to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

Blues boss Frank Lampard is understood to have doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga’s ability to be a commanding presence between the sticks as Chelsea look to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.

And along with Ajax’s Andre Onana, The Guardian report that Oblak is one of Chelsea’s key targets to replace Kepa this summer.

Oblak narrowly missed out on the Zamora Award to Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois – the honour which goes to the La Liga goalkeeper who has the lowest “goals-to-games” ratio, but Atletico chief Cerezo says his player is superior.

“I think winning the Zamora Award or finishing second depends on many circumstances throughout the 38 LaLiga matches,” he told

“There are times when you concede goals that should never have gone in and other times when there are goals that could have gone in but didn’t.

“For me, Oblak, and I’m speaking as a fan, is the best goalkeeper in the world. In respect to Courtois, he’s another one of the great goalkeepers in the world and fortunately both of them have worn our strip and we’ve won trophies with both of them.”

When pushed on whether Oblak would be staying at the club this summer, Cerezo added: “I always say that Oblak has a contract with Atletico and he’s the best goalkeeper in the world. It’s not unusual that he attracts offers from other big clubs.

“I’ll say what I always say. Oblak has a contract, he’s an Atletico player and that’s that.

“We have a lot of players, the squad as a whole is our biggest asset. Oblak is a magnificent player and in his position, undeniably, there is no one who is better than him at the moment.”
