President Keita’s resignation as President of Mali- Ecowas cuts all trade ties with The Republic of Mali, reactions from AU, UN and world leaders.

 

It would be recalled that Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta announced his resignation as President of Mali in the night of 18 to 19 August 2020, after being arrested by soldiers.

An action that has resulted in many reactions–
Following the political unrest that led to the detention and eventual ouster of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita as the president of Mali, the United Nations and the African Union (AU) have condemned the action by mutinous soldiers in the country. Omokoshaban reports that the AU demanded the release of Keita and other top government officials were detained by mutinous soldiers in an apparent coup attempt.

Omokoshaban gathered that the chairman of AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, denounced “any attempt at unconstitutional change” in government, urging the mutineers to “cease all use of violence.”

Reacting to the situation in Bamako, the Chairman of AU commission vivdly stated that it is absurd for political crisis to be solved by the use of force. UGC Faki then went ahead to demand for the immediate release of the Kieta and Now former prime minister, Cisse who was arrested with him by the millitary.

The Chairman further stated, calling on the 15 member of the ECOWAS bloc, the UN body and the International Community to jointly resist any act of force to solve the political crisis in Mali.

UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres also condemned the detentions of the government officials and demanded their immediate release. According to a UN’s spokesman, Guterres called for the “immediate restoration of constitutional order and rule of law” in Mali.

The Malian president was arrested Tuesday evening at his Sebenikoro residence, in the company of Prime Minister Boubou Cissé, at the end of a coup d’état that began with a mutiny that broke out in the morning at the Soundiata-Keïta military camp in Kati, 15 km from Bamako.
