PSG reach first ever Champions League final after claiming a 3-nil victory over RB Leipzig.

Paris Saint-Germain put on a footballing masterclass to reach the Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history, running riot against RB Leipzig to secure a statement 3-0 win.

Both sides came into the match full of confidence after securing a place in the semis with heroics in the one-legged quarter-final fixtures in Lisbon. Marquinhos and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting netted late to rescue PSG from a resilient Atalanta side, with Leipzig, on the other hand, stunning favourites Atletico Madrid.

Marquinhos set Thomas Tuchel’s side on their way, heading home Angel Di Maria’s free-kick (13) before Di Maria doubled PSG’s lead three minutes before the break following a mistake by Peter Gulacsi.

RB Leipzig looked overwhelmed and overawed by the occasion. Though neither of these clubs have much elite European pedigree to speak of, it was PSG which looked more at home in this semifinal.

The restart saw PSG continue their dominance, with Juan Bernat putting the game beyond the Bundesliga side in the 55th minute, driving the ball into the back of the net from Di Maria’s near-post cross.

Had Neymar not produced yet another profligate night in front of goal, the scoreline could have been much worse for RB Leipzig. Under young coach Julian Nagelsmann, the German side has stunned opponents and thrilled fans in this year’s competition but this proved a step too far against a star-studded PSG.

The last time PSG reached the Champions League semi-finals in 1995, it was three years before Kylian Mbappe was born and 14 years before RB Leipzig even came into existence – but having left it late to book their place in the final four, this was a far more straightforward night for the nine-time Ligue 1 champions.

Speaking after the match, Man of the Match, Angel Di Maria, said-
“We ate them up from minute one,” said the influential Di Maria. “It’s going to be tough to sleep between now and the final. We worked hard all game and we showed we deserve to be here. It doesn’t matter who we face: either Bayern or Lyon, we’ll give our all.”

In the climax to an engrossing fortnight of European football, PSG will face the winners of Bayern Munich’s last four clash with Lyon on Wednesday evening as they seek to mark their 50th anniversary with a first Champions League trophy.
