Mexico : Feminist activists protest against violence towards women

Feminist activists in the city of Mexico have attacked the offices of the country’s human rights commission with hammers, paint and banners on Monday.

This is in protest at inaction against alleged kidnapping and violence toward women.

More than 70,000 people – including women and children – have been reportedly killed in Mexico, with thousands more missing, since the country’s military was deployed in 2006 to tackle organised crime.

Most are believed to have been kidnapped by armed criminal groups.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s call for an end to the vandalism after a portrait of revolutionary leader Francisco Madero was defaced appeared to only intensify anger among the campaigners.

“How can you get outraged about this picture, but not about how my own daughter was abused?” shouted one campaigner, banging her hand against the canvas, in a video broadcast by Mexican media outlet Animal Politico.
