Two Men Sentence to 26yrs in Prison For Rape in Akwa Ibom

Do you remember the late 300-level student of Theatre Arts, University of Abuja who was ganged rape by two men in Eket where she went to visit her friend on 2nd August, 2017?

The rapists were today sentenced to 26 years in prison by Justice Nsemeke Daniel of Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Eket.

The convicts are 56-year old Akanimo Edoho Sam, from Eket and 45-year-old Godwin Asuquo Inyang, a native of Ikono Local Government Area.

In a judgment delivered today, Justice Daniel found the accused guilty of rape and conspiracy to commit felony and discharged them for murder over insufficient proof of the offense beyond reasonable doubts by the prosecution.

In the offense of rape, the Court sentenced the accused to 21 years in prison each, while on conspiracy to commit felony, they are to spend additional five years in prison each.

Justice Daniel held that the terms of the imprisonment are to run concurrently.

The incident occurred at number 78, Grace Bill Road, Eket, on 2nd August, 2017, when the 27-year-old undergraduate went to visit her friend where she met the first accused who offered her a bottle of drink and thereafter, forcefully raped her.

As if that was not enough, he invited the second accused to join in the raping spree.

The student later died.
