52 communities in IMO abolishes female genital mutilation

Twenty one communities in Owerri west and thirty one others in Ehime MBA no local government Areas of IMO state have unanimously decided to abolish the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).The declaration was made at an event organized by the council of traditional rulers in the area with support from the National orientation Agency (NOA)and the United Nation Children Fund(UNICEF) at the weekend.

During the course of the event, the Traditional ruler Exe Emmanuel Ibechi said “having been sensitive about the harmful effect of FGM and having delibrated during several community dialougues and long term health and psychological consequences of FGM on the health of our daughters, wives, sisters and nieces ,today declared that this practice crashed to be part of our culture and tradition”.

The chairman urged everyone to stop the practice and stated that defauters would be made to face the wrath in accordance with the law prohibiting the practice in the state.
