World Toilet Day: Lagos Govt Calls For Investment in Sustainable Sanitation

The Lagos State Government has appealed to the organised private sector and philanthropists for increased investments in sustainable sanitation systems as stakeholders commemorate this year’s World Toilet Day, with the theme “Sustainable Sanitation and Climate Change”.

Speaking at a special session on the essence of the global commemorative day in her Office at Lagos House, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals and Investment, Mrs. Solape Hammond, stressed that a cleaner and healthier environment is the only prerequisite for sustainable lifestyle and strong economic development.

She stated that a good sanitary system is needed towards achieving a cleaner and healthier environment, noting that the commitment of the State Government in providing basic environmental facilities is paramount to the attainment of the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda.

“The World Toilet Day is a day of great importance with a call to action for everyone. This annual event speaks directly to Goal Six: Clean Water and Sanitation for all in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. With the ongoing public and private collaboration on various socio-economic fronts, we will be able to score progress with this year’s commemoration and deepen the ongoing global efforts to address the challenge of accessing safely managed sanitation”, the Special Adviser submitted.

Hammond noted that significant results will be achieved with increased awareness on all environmental issues, especially on sanitary, waste disposal and attitudes towards a cleaner environment.

She maintained that having sustainable sanitation systems in place for Lagosians, especially people residing in rural and semi-urban areas, will aid the State government’s efforts in harnessing the recycling of human waste for energy production and agriculture.

The Special Adviser restated that this year’s theme “Sustainable Sanitation and Climate Change”, is an attempt towards seeking beneficial changes to the global environment, noting that access to sustainable sanitation systems should not be an exclusive preserve of the few in the society.

While acknowledging that her office has a mandate to help the State achieve the global sustainable development goals, Mrs. Hammond expressed readiness to partner corporate organisations and private individuals in bringing safe sanitation systems to Lagosians as recommended by the United Nations.

Recall that in 2013, the General Assembly of the United Nations resolved to set aside November 19 as a global commemorative day for conversations on the importance of toilets to achieving global health and sanitation. Stakeholders have, since then, lent their voices and efforts to safely make sanitation top priority every year.
