The Paramount Ruler of Eket, His Majesty, Edidem E. C. D. Abia has shown great displeasure at the rampant cases of rape in Eket and has charged Village Heads to be at the forefront of fighting against the menace.
The Monarch made his displeasure known in a meeting held between all Village Heads and Village Council Chairmen in Eket over the weekend at his Palace.
Edidem Abia warned that no Village Head should attempt to settle rape cases in the community because like murder, rape is criminal in nature and should be reported to the police while victim is taken to the hospital for medical examination by a doctor and medical report produced.
The meeting between the Paramount Ruler and Village Heads came on the heels of a rape case reported in Ikot Odiong Eket where an innocent girl was gang raped by four boys in a bush. Some persons, according to report, attempted to settle the matter in the Village.
Edidem E. C. D. Abia warned that anybody or Village Head who tries to cover rape case is culpable of abating crime and must be sanctioned, adding that it was an offence to have canal knowledge with an under age girl or adult without her consent.
He called on parents to be alive to their responsibilities of bringing up their children in the fear of God and good morals, adding that any person caught in the act of rape does not deserve to live in the community.
