After Blockage of Food Supply to South by Northerner, Basket of Tomatoes worth N5000 now cost N200 in Kano

A basket of fresh tomatoes which will cost roughly N5,000 and above is now been sold for N200 in Kano state.

The development is coming after Northeners deliberately block sales of food items to southern Nigerians in retaliation to Shasha crisis in Oyo state.

Speaking on the development, some northern leaders in charge of food market said they have diverted sales of food items to neighbouring countries, such as Niger, Cameroon, Benin and other countries.

The leaders vow not to return to south until Northerners killed in Shasha and compensated.

Bayero facebook page who share the price of the tomatoes has this to say “This basket of Tomatoes is now N200 in Kano State Northern Nigeria. What of your state, dear southerners ?”

Below are reaction that follow

Jamil said “We have options of farming with our available fertile vast lands, we also have gold, limestone etc … and if it’s oil that you all are bragging about we also have it in Bauchi and Sokoto .. so what’s up ???”

Olusegun said “Sell it for 50k for all we care. All these are inconsequential. The thing is that your profit level will eventually be affected negatively due to waste while we make do with the ready alternative at our end. Keep your agric products and stop overrating yourselves.”

Joseph Ajibade said “in all my youthful days we were fed on what we produce from our farms in my home town in the Southwest. We only ate rice during the yuletide period as complementary food to other alternatives. Let us go back to the good old days of subsistence farming and scale it up on State level to mechanized farming since we have arable land in abundance. Let the cows, goats and sheep be branched by those interested in animal husbandry. After all, those interested in piggery are doing it without disturbing other farmers why should cattle dealers be nuisance to the public.”

Pius said “Let the northerners continue to enjoy it and it will motivate the southerners to continue with farming too because they does it before oil discovery”

John Nweze said “If the cost of production is N500 and it is selling for N200, somebody must be losing a lot of money.

Government has so far not made any provision to compensate for the losses. This is going to affect the next cycle of production.

Meanwhile Igbo boys are placing order for containers of tinned tomatoes from Holland, Romania and Spain to arrive in two weeks time.”
