MY DAD TOLD ME, ‘IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE A PASTOR, YOU HAVE TO DO IT ON A HIGH LEVEL’. HE THEN WENT AHEAD TO GET ME A JOB AS A PASTOR IN A JAMAICAN CHURCH.
I can never forget my Dad, when he finally accepted that I become a Pastor, he said, ‘You’re my first son. If you are going to be Pastor, you have to do it on a high level’. So, He went to London, and thankfully one of my cousins got married in a Jamaican church. My father went to the Pastor, the pastor also had a secular job. My Dad said, ‘Don’t you need a Pastor here?’. The man replied, ‘Yes’. My Dad said, ‘If you hear my son preach…’ He marketed me. When my Father came back from England, do you know what he did? ChurchGist. He came back with a letter of appointment, the guy’s passport, the guy’s ID, the guy’s everything, for my visa. I said ‘Daddy!’. He answered, ‘You are the one that said God called you. All this one you are doing here, do it high’.
He followed me to Abuja, we lodged at Reiz Continental, which was one of the best hotels those days and opposite was Metroplaza where the British Council had a visa office. He told me, ‘I know you are praying, if they born you well, let them refuse you the visa tomorrow’. I said, ‘No Daddy, no problem’, but I was praying under my breath.
We got to Metroplaza and when they refused me that visa, I was excited, I screamed, ‘Glory to God!’ because COZA was around 250 people, I was so passionate about them. My father did not talk to me till we got back to Ilorin, I think we even came differently. He just formed that he was having a meeting. ChurchGist. Do you know that before my father passed, I had the biggest office in Metroplaza? Not one of the offices, the same place where I went for the interview, our Church was inside that same space.
