First Governor of The Central Bank of Nigeria

Mallam Aliyu Mai-Bornu (1919-1970) was a Kanuri born in Yola, present day, Adamawa State. His father was from Borno state.

After his secondary education, he earned a government scholarship to travel abroad. He studied Economics at Bristol University in the United Kingdom graduating in 1957.

On July 25, 1963, Mai-Bornu was appointed the first indigenous Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (1963–1967) succeeding Josh Jomesky. His portrait adorns the 1000 naira note.
