For about ten years now, Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina had successfully dribbled law enforcement agents and managed to stay free from proper prosecution. He has connections in the highest of places, and from time to time, the “Nigerian factor” played in to free him from deserved trouble. He was so confident in the Nigerian factor that while uproars over his nefarious activities with the Pension Fund was ongoing, he went ahead to print posters (with monies stolen from the pension fund) to run for the governorship of his State. He convinced his family members and fans that he was been unjustly haunted because of his political beliefs (isn’t that the usual and now boring lines of Nigeria’s thiefing gangsters parading as political leaders?)
Today, after many years of trying to escape justice, that justice has finally been served – even though I believe the sentence isn’t enough. He is not only going to serve eight years behind bars, his son, whom he misled into thinking that you could be lawless, and as long as you have the right contacts and money, nothing would happen, is also in prison.
The wheels of justice could grind slowly, but most times, it catches up with the criminals at the long run. It is my earnest wish however, that our anti-graft agencies speed up their investigations and those who have so recklessly stolen our present and still bent on mortgaging our future, are quickly sent to jail.
