How Major T.Y Danjuma led the assault on Aguiyi Ironsi and murdered him in cold blood 52 years Ago

History on the 29th July 1966; Major T.Y Danjuma led the assault on Aguiyi Ironsi and murdered him in cold blood, 52 years ago.

The Head of State and Supreme Commander of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunankwe Aguiyi Ironsi who was on a state visit to Western Nigeria was this evening kidnapped by Major T.Y Danjuma in collaboration with some soldiers from the 4th Battalion,Ibadan. Also taken away were Col Francis Fajuyi the military Governor of Western Nigeria and Capt Andrew Nwankwo,Ironsi’s Airforce ADC. Another officer,Brigadier Hillary Njoku of the Ikeja Garrison who had accompanied Ironsi to Ibadan did manage to escape in the melee, but under a machine gun fire. Ironsi,Fajuyi and Nwankwo were driven to an unknown destination in the outskirts of Ibadan, where they were beaten-up and tortured. It was also during the ‘torturing process’ that Capt Nwankwo, who was also once a bodyguard to Emperor Heile Sellesie of Ethiopia managed to escape. But Ironsi and Fajuiyi were later finished-off with bursts of sten gun.Their bodies were later discovered weeks later…in a shallow grave. It was Col Joe Akahan,an Idoma and the Commander of Ibadan army barracks that provided the ‘logistics’ used in this attack, while Capt. Theophilius Danjuma who had arrived from Lagos led the attack after Lt-Colonel Yakubu Gowon had given the go ahead. (This led to the pogrom of 1966) …..exactly 52 years
