World Env Day: If we don’t befriend nature, nature will take its toll on us – Gov Soludo

Ndi Anambra, World Environment Day 2022 as championed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is celebrated on June 5 every year to raise awareness about degrading environmental conditions and to encourage people globally to take positive environmental actions, to help create a better future.

This year’s theme; ‘Only One Earth’ is apt for our dear state because the environment is the number one existential threat in Anambra State and our government is determined to tackle it head-on.

To achieve our lofty goals in this all important sector, every citizen has a role to play because a look around our cities, environmental challenges including erosion and proper waste management is staring us in the face. I therefore call on all ndi Anambra to plant, at least, two or more trees and discourage deforestation as a way of salvaging what is left of our environment. Indeed, the future beckons and we must seize every opportunity today, to enthrone a better future.

We shall continue to synergize with the federal government and DFIs to profer lasting solution to this heavy menace. In the meantime, our government has commenced mobilization of active stakeholders to commence proactive steps, just in a bid to prevent the existing erosion sites from worsening and prevent new ones from developing.

You would recall that our administration has since commenced environmental interventions starting from Okpoko, Onitsha and other parts of the state. We have not forgotten our promise contained in our manifesto and we will not fail.

As a state, our goal still remains to become the most liveable smart mega city in Nigeria. I repeat, its doable and requires planning and enforcement of minimum best practices and standards.

Yes! We promised to build clean, green and planned cities, communities and markets by continuing and completing the design of the state master plan, designing and enforcing a template of minimum standards for infrastructure and other facilities, embarking upon an expansive but phased modernization of and renewal of our major urban areas, implementing robust clean and green initiatives and many more.

Let me say that we are ever determined to ensure that our plan for Ndi Anambra succeeds.

May I on behalf of the Government say, Happy World Environment Day as we get to work.
