June 12: Out Tears Still Dripping in Ondo – Temokun

(June 12 Elegy in memory of those slain in Owo on June 5, 2022)

Just this day yesterday,
The vampires from the north tip-toed,
To our sanctuary in OWO,
Bearing poisoned arrows, with guns
And their gun-powders,
While our eyes were closed in prayers,
They struck,
They fired our fathers
And murdered our mothers,
And we woke up to meet our deads.

They killed the children of God,
In the house of God
And our mothers aged fell to the bullets
And died in their blood,
As darkness descended
To blanket the face of our earth in a minute
And we were thrown into mourning,
It was our blackest Sunday
And death visited our cathedral for a feast!

Today is June 12,
When we used to occupy the streets,.
And sing our songs of revolt
For a new country that we desire
But today we are too frail
To coin the tunes of our agitations
Because our tears are still dripping in Ondo.

But when our tears are dry
We shall march again
Even with deaths in our bushes
And the marauding rag-tags in their ambushes,
We shall march again
And it shall be with spirit of mutiny!
