An Area Court in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Thursday sentenced Hussaini Maifata, 26, to one month imprisonment for stealing building materials from a shop.
The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to trespass and theft, and begged the court for leniency.
NAN reports that the judge gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine or one month imprisonment for theft and asked him to pay the sum of N200, 000 as compensation to the complainant or eix months imprisonment in default.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat , told the court that the case was reported at the Jos”C” Division Police Station on September 28, 2022, by Mr Hyacinth Opara, the shop owner.
He said the complainant reported that the convict on the same date the case was reported, trespassed into his shop and stole a bending machine cast, iron rods of various sizes and door keys.
The prosecutor further told the court that during a police investigation, the convict confessed to have committed the act and two pieces of iron rods were recovered from him.
The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
