Water Deionization

Deionization is another way to obtain water that is chemically pure. The mechanism behind these, is that tap water is passed through anion and cation exchange resin, on the resin any ion present in the water will be exchange with hydrogen and hydroxide ion from the resin. The cation is made of hydrogen ion so if any of the following calcium, magnesium, and sodium is present in the water it will be remove by exchanging it with hydrogen ion on the cation, also anion is made up with hydroxide ion, if any of the following sulphate, chloride, bicarbonate, silica and nitrate are present in the water, it will be exchange with hydroxide ion present in the resin. After the exchange of the chemical in the water with hydrogen and hydroxide ion, the two combine together to form water. From the knowledge of periodic table, we learn that ion conduct electricity, with it should clear that deionize water if free of any ion, as such the rate at which it conduct electricity is low, and also free from water soluble salt, but the what is not free from pyrogen as such it cannot be used to prepared intravenous solution. There are different type of deionizer available, the build type include hand held deionizer and bench type deionizer. The latest model of deionizer available in the market is easy to use. First installation of deionizer should be done by an expert in that area and make availability of the spare part during the installation.

Make to regenerate the resin after usage period.

Procedure of resin generation

The procedure for generating resin is by the passage of hydrochloric acid via cation resin and sodium hydroxide via anion resin, and rinse them properly with distilled water. Better still read the manufacturer installation manual that follow the instrument. In some case also some manufacturer usually offer installation service to their client free of charge. For some advance laboratory investigation, such as enzyme estimation test, pure water is required, these pure can be achieve by passage of distilled water via deionization of column better still double distillation method is adopted.  But using deionize column is the most convenient method compare to the double standard method, also have more advantage of the resin require little frequency regeneration that it compare the way they are used in tap water.

Testing of deionize water

When water is obtained by deionization process, it should be test to conform the purity of the obtained water. As we said earlier, deionize water have less electric conductivity, as such have high resistance to electricity. As such estimating the resistivity of the water is the method employ to determine the produced water purity or quality. Conductivity meter is usually the component of deionizer. Resistivity above 1.5 to 2.0Ohms is the most acceptable usage of deionize water quality in all most laboratory.
