Collection of faecal specimens can either be of early morning, timed, or random. The methods of collection depend on the types of investigation requested.
When investigating for qualitative analysis, i.e. occult blood test is requested, then a number of random specimens should be collected for the investigation.
Small, clean, dry, wide mouth and sterile Containers, should be given to the patient, and the scientists should direct him/her on how to collect the sample.
In case of sample from outside patient, small portion of the sample should be sent to laboratory via the container suggested above. Most of the containers are either wax cotton or plastic universal as shown below.
Now when you are to carry out quantitative investigation, for example faecal fat estimation, whole stool should be send to the laboratory for a period of 5 days. The sample should be collected into a recommended jar, if hat is not available, the specimens can be collected into polythene sheet in a bed pan, then gathered the end of the polythene and then tire it with elastic band. Then keep the whole specimens in freezer to be frozen, and then removed the polythene.
Note: stool sample for other chemical analysis are store in a refrigerator at 4°C without adding preservation.
