Sad: Photo of Corp members working with Channelstv killed by Shiites yesterday

Precious Owolabi had his dreams held close to his heart. He felt lucky to secure a place in Channels TV for his NYSC scheme. He pursued his dreams with passion and I think he already had pictures of himself stepping up the ladder of success, sketched, framed and enlarged in his heart.

He went about each day with a hope that he is on the right track. He still had some hope in Nigeria. If he didn’t, he would have preferred to leave Channels TV than accept to cover the Shiites/Police clash. He believed the Police would provide him some shield, or that even the Shiites would harm no journalist. Even in war, journalists, doctors, and other professionals on special assignment, are mostly immune to attacks. They are mostly considered safe.

But they said it was a stray bullet, and you want to ask why the bullet didn’t stray elsewhere. Why did it have to stray to the head of a young man, still building the bricks of his dreams? Bullets don’t hear questions, they don’t have answers.

Precious had friends and family. They will miss him. They never thought this would be the news about him. They were waiting for news from him, but he became the news – a bad news.

How does someone truly say a ‘rest in peace’ to such a young, budding soul? Will his blood drip into the heads of those who can quell this surging war, and get them rethink their hardlines? That’s my prayer. Will his blood douse the grief of the Shiites, and make them think of more peace and less fire? Amen.
