Journalists, it Critical Stakeholders in the fight against corruption – Magu

Journalists is the major stakeholders to fight corruption in the country.

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has said that journalists are the major stakeholders in the fight against corruption.

Magu, who speak through it representative, the EFCC Ilorin Zonal Head, Isyaku Sharu, stated this on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 while receiving members of the Executive of the Kwara State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, who paid a courtesy visit to the Commission’s Office in Ilorin, Kwara State.

He said: “You are major stakeholders in the anti-corruption fight and have been keeping track of all our activities. The anti-graft body has recorded many achievements in this zone courtesy of NUJ.

“Development journalism is very key in boosting the economy. Our mandate is to fight economic and financial crimes in the country and we have been being doing that.

“If the cyberspace is not secured, foreign investors will not patronise us. We thank you for collaborating with us in the fight against corruption.”

While charging journalists to do more in exposing corrupt individuals in the society, he noted that “the fight against corruption is everybody’s business. We must flush out criminals in our society. Part of our activities is to prevent crimes. Beyond convictions, we have been sensitizing members of the public through our Public Affairs Directorate on crime prevention. We must encourage foreign investors to come to our land. It is when our cyberspace is secure that foreign investors will patronise us. Parents and civil society organisations have huge roles to play here.”

The Chairman of NUJ Kwara State Chapter, Mallam Umar Abdulwahab who led the delegation commended the EFCC for its achievements so far.

“EFCC is playing major roles in sustaining our democracy. We are following your activities. We have roles to play as journalists. Beyond the issue of reporting, we must create platforms to have interaction with EFCC to secure our cyberspace,” Abdulwahab stated.
