Gunmen Open fire on Commuter in Abuja the federal capital of Nigeria

The security situation in the Nigerian capital, Abuja and its environs is getting worse by the day – Almost on a daily basis, stories of attacks and kidnapping by unknown gunmen has become a reoccurring issue in the FCT – Commuters around Zuma rock along Abuja-Kaduna highway, in Niger state A report by Daily Trust indicates that gunmen suspected to be kidnappers shot at commuters around Zuma rock along Abuja-Kaduna highway, in Niger state on Tuesday, November 5.

The incident occured at night when workers and traders were returning to their homes from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A victim, who escaped the attack, said around 9pm, the vehicle he boarded from Zuba axis in Abuja was shot at on approaching the area, just close to a military check point.

AHe said the attack forced the driver to reverse,after which all passengers alighted from the vehicle and fled the scene.

A trader at Wuse market in Abuja, Hassan Ibrahim, also explained that hundreds of passengers got out of their vehicles to take refuge around nearby Zuma estate.

He said some security men in plain clothes were later sighted heading towards the direction where the gunmen laid the siege.

A similar incident took place at the same area where about 20 persons were abducted and taken into the bush. Some of them were held in captivity for days before regaining freedom after paying ransom.

Last month, heavily armed kidnappers abducted a widow, Mrs. Hannatu Tukura, alongside her 30-year-old son, Takpeyilo Tukura in Tiza Junction in Kuje area council of the FCT.

A resident of the community, simply identified as Benjamin, said the incident happened around 8:12 pm on Sunday, October 20, when the woman, her son and two other women were travelling to Rubochi village.

He said Takpeyilo was driving and on approaching the junction, gunmen appeared from the bush and flagged the vehicle down, opened the door and ordered the woman and her son out of the vehicle and whisked them away into the bush.
