The Former Pakistani military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf has been sentenced to death by the country’s Constitutional Court.

The former military general was convicted for treason for suspending the Constitution in a bid to quell protests in 2007. He was forced to resign in 2008 following threats of impeachment.

The charges were instituted by his old-time rival Nawaz Sharif, who returned as Prime Minister in 2013. Sharif was deposed by Musharraf in a military coup in 2001.
