Senator Al-Makura Attends North Central Police Regional Security Summit in Lafia

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, Governors of Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Senate Commiter Chairman on Police Affairs, Senator Jika, and some lawmakers from the National Assembly, military and para-military commanders, police commissioners, traditional rulers, elders, academics and civil societies from Nasarawa state, on Wednesday met in Lafia for a security summit organized by the IGP and hosted by Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.

The summit, themed “Strategic Partnership for Effective Community Policing in the North-Central Zone/FCT” was an all-inclusive North Central Security Summit in Lafia, Nasarawa state capital with a view to addressing kidnapping, armed robery, assassination, homicides and all other crimes in the region.

Speaking at the Security Summit which was held at the Taal Conference Hotel, Lafia, the Inspector General of Police, Adamu ‎said the summit was part of police strategy of enhancing multi-stakeholder participation towards increased synergy and community policing. According to him,” in order to police the nation in the most cost effective manner, it is imperative that we draw in our historical heritage and leverage on our traditional strength as a country.

At the summit, heads of all security establishments, traditional rulers, civil societies and humanitarian actors took turns to give updates of security situations in Nasarawa state while questions were asked and suggestions made by different participants.

Senator Al-Makura while making his speech appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to be deliberate ‎in the deployment of police personnel to strategic locations in the state in order to leverage on their understanding of their localities for effective policing. That the position of rank and file be deployed in their respective states until they reach the position of ASPs.

Al-Makura also stressed the importance of establishing quasi security outfits, such as his brainchild in Nasarawa state, the NAYES.

Other speakers at the event also admonished the FG to provide employment for youths as a means to curb insecurity.

Some repentant bandits who voluntarily surrendered themselves said they are tired of staying in the bush.

The joint communique of the summit was read by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule.
