Bill seeking for immunity for Nigerians lawmakers has passed second reading on floor of federal house of representative.
The bill is seeking to grant immunity on both members of states and federal legislature in Nigeria.
If the bill is passed into law, it would be difficult to prosecute lawmakers found guilty of any crimes while in office.
The bill sponsored by Olusegun Odebunmi, a house of representative member representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency of Oyo State seeks to alter Section 308 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to extend immunity to cover presiding officers of legislative institutions.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has kick against the bill, said he was not in support of the bill and he only would only agree to it if it was proposed to take effect from 2023.
The lawmakers later resolved that the bill should be pushed to Nigerians through a public hearing to accept or reject it.
