It has been reported that at least 356 soldiers have indicated interest in voluntary retirement, stating that they have lost interest in the Nigerian Army.⁣

It was gathered that the soldiers wrote to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, on Friday, July 3, 2020, under Reference NA/COAS/001, quoting the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/rating/airmen (Revised) 2017.⁣

A 17-page circular signed by Brig Gen T.E. Gagariga on behalf of the army chief contained the approval of the soldiers’ disengagement.

We found that most of the soldiers in question are from the North-East theatre of operation.⁣

Sources in the Nigerian Army said that the major reasons for the voluntary retirement are poor weapons, loss of morale, continuous loss of soldiers to Boko Haram attacks and unimproved allowances.
