The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished no fewer than 134 houses at Apo Akpmajenya indigenous community, in Apo district of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
Briefing newsmen after the exercise yesterday, the director, department of development control, Muktar Galadima, explained that the demolition was meant to pave way for the construction of a major road network in the area, adding that the community was earlier marked for demolition since January this year.
Galadima also said prior to the demolition, the FCTA through its relevant agencies, had interface with the inhabitants of the community on the need for them to vacate the area, which falls under the corridor of the planned outer Southern Express Way (OSEX).
Also speaking, the deputy director, planning and resettlement in the department of resettlement and compensation, Malam Nasir Suleiman, said about 131 houses and 169 plots were given as compensation to members of the affected community.
Suleiman said the administration has also provided a land for the building of a house for the traditional ruler of the community, while most of the residents of the area had already moved to Apo Resettlement Scheme.
Also, the director of Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Malam Baba Shehu Lawan, who was at the press briefing, noted that the village has constituted an environmental nuisance and generated monumental wastes.
Contributing, the director, FCT Department of Security Services, Malam Adamu Gwary, noted that the village also served as a criminal hideout where most of the properties stolen are taken to, including cars, even as he reiterated the determination of the administration to continue to provide adequate security of lives and properties in the territory
