Stakeholders divided over Appointment of Amokachi’s as Buhari’s SA

Sports stakeholders have expressed extraordinary opinions on the appointment of former Super Eagles forward, Daniel Amokachi, as Special Assistant on Sports to the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Amokachi’s appointment used to be introduced in a press statement with the aid of the Media Office of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development on Thursday.

The letter titled, ‘PMB appoints Amokachi Special Assistant, Sports’, was once issued on August 17 and signed through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

The declaration quoted the appointment letter as reading, “I am thrilled to inform you that Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has accredited your appointment as Special Assistant on Sports. The appointment takes impact from August 11, 2020.”

Mutiu Adepoju, Amokachi’s former national teammate, described the appointment as top news for ex-footballers.

“This is very tremendous information and I congratulate Amokachi for the appointment. This is properly for him as an man or woman and for us,” Adepoju told The PUNCH.

“This is why we’ve usually referred to as on footballers to add education to their profession, so we can have more opportunities after football.”

Former Nigeria Taekwondo Federation president, George Ashiru, additionally applauded the appointment.

“I see it as a superb pass and a symbolic one by using the President; it encourages ex-internationals that even after they retire, the country nevertheless finds them beneficial due to the fact of their experience. This will send a message to the youths that if they reap some thing for the country, they will not be forgotten.”

But sports journalist and administrator, Godwin Enakhena, puzzled the appointment, pronouncing it  was not in the fantastic interest of sports activities development in the country.

“For me, it’s a waste of time. This is not what we want to take sports out of where it is proper now. If Amokachi is proper enough, let him be appointed as the sports activities minister. Don’t give a portfolio where he doesn’t have any control,” Enakhena told The PUNCH.

“We recognize the hassle in our country, sports is no longer taken seriously. The query is, who will Amokachi document to? Is it the sports activities minister or the President?

“Is (Sunday) Dare not reporting to the President as far as sports troubles are concerned? I think there is no fundamental accountability connected to the portfolio.”

Buhari had on February 13, appointed Amokachi as the country’s Football Ambassador.

Amokachi, a gold medallist at the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics, also received the 1994 and 2013 AFCON as participant and assistant educate of the Eagles respectively.

An FA Cup winner with Everton (1995), the ex-Club Brugge striker also holds the difference of the first footballer-ever to rating in the new-format UEFA Champions League in 1992.
