Man Utd urged to complete transfer for centre-back who is ‘better than Koulibaly’.

Manchester United  should sign Dayot Upamecano because he is better than Kalidou Koulibaly, according to former Tottenham
striker Darren Bent. RB Leipzig defender Upamecano is reportedly now a target of United for this transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer  has identified the Frenchman as the ideal player to partner club captain Harry Maguire at the back.

United have long been linked with Napoli defender Koulibaly, who is a top target for rivals Manchester City  in this window.

But Bent has not been impressed with Koulibaly when he has seen him of late.

The pundit believes Upamecano, who is eight years younger than Koulibaly, would be a better option.

While discussing the defenders United should sign, Bent said on talkSPORT: “Koulibaly seems to be the one people speak about, but when I watched him in the Champions League, he wasn’t great at all.

“I like the RB Leipzig centre-half, he really impressed me and against Spurs he was superb in the Champions League.

“He’s one I thought a lot more people would have gone for. I think he’s better than Koulibaly.”

Meanwhile, United are closing in on their first signing of the summer in Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman is set to move to Old Trafford for a fee of £40million.

United’s top target remains Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho but the £108m price tag is putting the Red Devils off.

United’s lack of business so far has frustrated some fans but former midfielder Darren Fletcher has urged the supporters to trust Solskjaer and the club’s hierarchy.

“The problem with this is that every agent in the world links their players to Manchester United,” Fletcher said.

“So fans get their hopes up and see that, then it’s ‘why are we not doing this?’

“Their track record so far has been fantastic since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been the manager. They’re identifying the right targets, they’re being patient.

“Like everything, Manchester United transfers are the most difficult because of the money involved and they want to maximise it.

“It’s no different in this current situation (with Covid-19).”
