Fire razed some sections of the Otukpo Main Market in Benue State on Wednesday.

The fire, which started around 6am, destroyed 64 shops with goods worth millions of naira.

Firefighters responded swiftly but due to the nature of the market, they could not do anything because they could not access the area.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, George Alli, said the timely intervention of the personnel of the Benue State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other sections of the market.

Alli listed the affected areas to include the building materials section as well as electronics and plastic materials sections.

The chairman, said it was too early to determine the worth of property destroyed by the inferno, expressed sadness over the incident.

He thanked the men of Otukpo Fire Service for quickly responding to the calls to contain the fire.

He urged the traders to coporate with them as they are always on the recieving end when such a thing happens.
