NBC Suspend, fine Channels TV ₦5M for Interviewing Proscribed IPOB leader

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has suspended Channels Television.

The broadcasting station was suspend on the 26th of April 2021, after interviewing the leader of the Proscribed indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB on live television.

The body who is in charge of Nigeria broadcasting also fine the station sum of ₦5 million of what it alleged breaching the broadcast code.

The suspension and fine was contained in a letter address to the Managing Director of Channels Television, signed by the Acting Director General of the NBC, Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, referred to Channels 7pm live broadcast programme of Sunday, April 25, 2021, accusing the TV station of allowing a leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) to make secessionist and inciting declarations on air without being cautioned or reprimanded by the station.

The NBC described it as contrary to the broadcast code.

“It also accused the station of allowing the guest speaker to allegedly make derogatory and misleading statements about the Nigerian Army, despite being proscribed by a court of law.”

Channel television hard on Sunday grant an interview to the leader of the indigenous people of biafra (IPOB) after the first leader, Ikonso was killed on Saturday by the Nigerian security Force.

In the interview, the leader of IPOB vow to revenge The Killing of Ikonso.
