CUT DOWN BY HIS SUPPOSED PROTECTORS?
All security agencies in Nigeria are funded by Nigerian citizens for the protection of Nigerian citizens and properties. So, a Nigerian should feel safe when he or she runs into a security agent, even if he were been pursued by hoodlums. But, when the same security agents are now the ones suspected to be killing innocent, unarmed and law-abiding citizens, then, we obviously have a big problem on our hands.
The news making the rounds is that this young man; upwardly mobile, ambitious, happy and loved by his own family, was gruesomely murdered by no other person than an official of the Nigerian Air Force.
Oguchi Unachukwu was said to be hurrying to catch a flight to Lagos, from he was to connect with his Germany bound flight to return to his base, but he was gunned down, apparently, in error, when he was flagged down at a checkpoint manned by Air Force personnel, he stopped briefly, then drove on, allegedly, when he thought that they waved him on.
Oguchi Unachukwu was not armed. He was a father, a husband, a brother, uncle and a breadwinner. His death is heartbreaking not just to his immediate family and beneficiaries, but to all lovers of justice.
I join all well-meaning citizens to demand answers from the Nigerian Air Force authorities on what really happened to this young man. It is very easy to find the culprit. They should fish out their men deployed to the Imo Airport junction on the day of this killing, and the officer who fired this shot will be identified, and appropriate punishment will be meted out to him.
If they didn't deploy any of their men to that checkpoint on the day in question, then, they should also come out and tell us so. If their explanation is convincing enough, then, we will also blame them for the death of the young man, because that checkpoint is theirs and there should be no reason for it to be left open to the infiltration of criminals given the critical security situation in the State.
