Man who stole govt vehicle parked inside mosque premises lands in police net


A man who stole a government vehicle parked inside the premises of a mosque during Friday’s Jumat service and fled with it has been arrested by the operatives of the Katsina State Police Command, the command announced on Monday, September 13.


The man, whose name was given as Hayatu Bashir, was said to have stolen the Hilux pick-up vehicle belonging to the Katsina State Standing Committee on Improvement of Farmers/Herders Relationship in Katsina State inside the Jumat mosque at GRA in Katsina, the state capital.

It was gathered that after stealing the vehicle at GRA in the state capital, he drove it to Malumfashi town in Malumfashi Local Government Area of the state and was about to start cutting the vehicle into pieces in order to sell it as parts when policemen swooped on him and arrested him.

According to a statement by the state police command through its Public Relations Officer, Isah Gambo, on his Facebook wall, his arrest followed the alarm raised by the driver of the government vehicle after he could not find the Hilux pick-up where it was parked in the mosque.

It was gathered that following the alarm and as a result of a tip-off, policemen went to Malumfashi where they met the man who was about to start cutting the vehicle in order to sell it as parts.

According to the statement, he was promptly arrested and brought to the state police command’s headquarters and upon his interrogation, he was said to have confessed stealing the vehicle with the connivance of his gang members who are said to be currently on the run.

He was also said to have confessed during interrogation that the theft of the pick-up vehicle would be his third time stealing cars, having stolen two on previous occasions.

The statement said investigation about the theft of the vehicle was ongoing after which he would be prosecuted in the court of law while a manhunt has been launched for the fleeing members of the gang.
