Seme Customs Records N1.6B in 9 Months, as Benin Republic Imposes High Levies on Transit Goods to Nigeria

The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has made tremendous progress in Revenue generation and anti-smuggling in the last nine months, despite the imposition of high duties and levies by Benin government on goods transiting through Benin Republic contrary to ECOWAS protocols and international transit agreement.

The statement was made available by the Customs Area Controller of Seme Command, Compt. Bello Jibo during an interaction with the media on the 14th of September, 2021 at Seme-Krake Joint Border Post.

In his words, “The efforts of the valiant officers and men of the Command translates into remarkable interceptions of One thousand two hundred and forty-four (1244) smuggled items with a duty paid value of Eight hundred and eighty-six million, four hundred and twenty-eight thousand, one hundred and sixty-three Naira forty-one kobo (N886, 428, 163.41) only.

He also said the command made a huge seizure of three thousand, one hundred and eight-six ( 3,186) parcels of cannabis Sativa concealed with sharp sand along Badagry-Seme road. While the Command has handed over two hundred and thirty-two (232) parcels of cannabis Sativa and will soon hand over other seized drugs to National Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA) Special Command Seme.

“In Addition to that, the Command processed and exited exported trade volume of six hundred and thirty-five thousand, one hundred and forty-nine, twenty-three (635, 149.23) MT, with the Free Onboard (FOB) value of fifteen billion, five hundred and sixty-four million, one hundred and thirty thousand, five hundred and eighteen Naira, nine kobo (N15, 564, 130, 518.09) only, and the NESS value of seventy-eight million, two hundred and three thousand, seven hundred and seventy-nine naira, eighty-one kobo (N78, 203, 779. 81) only, during the period under review. Under ETLS, the Command treated and exited one thousand, three hundred and fourteen (1,314) trucks of goods under the scheme. ” He stated.

Similarly, the reinvigorated Command’s drive against smuggling of premium motor spirit (PMS) has recorded ten thousand, three hundred and nine (10,309) jerry cans of PMS, twenty-five (25litres each), which is equivalent to eight (8) trailers tankers load of thirty-three thousand liters each.

Despite the Levies and duties, he said the Command made a grand total for both seizure and revenue in nine months a sum of One billion, six hundred and five million, two hundred and fifty-six thousand, six hundred and ninety-three naira, twenty-six kobo( N1,605 256, 693.26) only.

While thanking the Comptroller General of Customs and the management team for their support and guidance, he also appreciated the maximum cooperation received from stakeholders, the Border Communities, security agencies, and the media for their support.
