Google hires Paypal exec to push crypto payments services

The tech giant Google has hired former PayPal exec, Arnold Goldberg, to oversee its payments services division.“The move is part of a broader strategy to team up with a wider range of financial services, including cryptocurrencies,” Google’s president of commerce Bill Ready told Bloomberg.Google has further established its footprint in the crypto world. “Crypto is something we pay a lot of attention to. As user demand and merchant demand evolves, we’ll evolve with it,” Ready said.The firm is working through various partnerships and cryptocurrency integrations to enable its users to keep crypto assets in their digital cards while spending fiat currencies.Goldberg was formerly the Senior VP of Merchant Product and Technology at PayPal.

Tapping into the crypto world

What’s more, Google is forming a group focused on the blockchain and related technologies led by a newly appointed search advertising veteran Shivakumar Venkataraman.Venkataraman, a vice president of engineering at Alphabet Inc.’s Google, is now leading a unit dedicated to “blockchain and other next-generation distributed computing and data storage technologies,” according to Bloomberg. The executive will be a “founding leader” “of the Lab, a business unit of Google that features a mix of virtual and augmented reality efforts.
